Westshore Selected by DNRE as Winning Bidder for Lone Pine Party Store Sampling Project
In June 2010, Westshore Consulting was invited to bid on sampling services at the Lone Pine Party Store site in Honor, Benzie County, Michigan by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources & Environment (DNRE). Today, Westshore was advised that they were the low bidder for this phase of work at the site and would be contracted to begin sampling in September 2010. This project represents the second bid acceptance by the DNRE in this county in the past year and reflects the state's ongoing efforts to provide sound environmental management of site's with lingering environmental contamination.
The Lone Pine Party Store site formerly maintained two underground storage tanks (removed in 2009) and free product was historically present at the site but has not been detected in the past several years following the removal of impacted soils from the subsurface. Ongoing sampling of groundwater at the site will be accomplished to monitor the natural attenuation of residual gasoline contaminants and confirm that nearby environmental receptors (wetlands, drinking water wells, etc.) will not be affected.
This is an example of Westshore's strategy as a client advocate with the DNRE, functioning with state regulators to achieve project goals that are amenable with both the financial needs of the client and regulatory requirements at the state level. Westshore Consulting's Senior Hydrogeologist Jason E. Poll, CPG stated that, "we find it in the client's best interest to treat the state as an ally not an adversary when navigating the leaking underground storage tank regulatory jungle. Sometimes it can seem that the state presents a moving target for owners and operators of gas stations, but an understanding of the underlying goals of the DNRE helps us stay in front of changing requirements." Mr. Poll will act as the project manager for the Lone Pine Party Store project.
